It’s my pleasure to welcome you to Chemical Engineering Department at the MGM University. The department was founded in 1983 and serve as an academic home to undergraduate and doctoral students. Department has been experiencing a growth at the undergraduate level due to an increased placement opportunities for our students, and our outcome based education program. We provide our undergraduate students with hands-on work experience by placing them in a structured, multi-disciplinary projects and internships with local and national corporations.

Chemical Engineering department is always in pursuit of excellence and recognize that students who become connected with current engineering practice and research areas, through participation in industrial internships and projects during their undergraduate years, tend to perform better and have a higher level of determination in their later professional life.

Research activities of our students are supported by the outstanding facilities available in the Department, IIRC-the process automation and additive manufacturing facility, as well as interdisciplinary support from various engineering and science departments.

Undergraduate Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) in Chemical Engineering is aligned with All India Council of Technical Education and is globally benchmarked. The total credits students need to complete are 160 and are usually completed in 4 academic years. One academic year is divided in Two Semesters and assessment is carried out at the end of every semester. The Quality is assessed by grading system.

Doctoral research program - Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering

Department offers Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering and Inter-disciplinary engineering streams. Research areas are mainly Advanced Process Modelling, Simulation and Control, Process Plant Design, Bio-fuels and Bio-fertilizers, Waste Valorization, Drug Delivery, Nanotechnology, Environmental Pollution Control, etc.

The aim of Bachelor of Technology in Chemical Engineering degree program of study is to prepare students of the highest quality professional and technical leadership skills to have successful career in chemical and allied industry and other sectors of global economy. Students will achieve this goal by developing strong base of fundamentals of science and engineering which will enable them to build profound engineering judgment and practical insights. Environmental effects of chemical operations are highlighted throughout the program, giving importance to successful control and mitigation of pollution and improved health and safety at work place.

The Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) in Chemical Engineering degree program of study is accredited by the AICTE and offers choice based credit system education. In addition to core courses, student can opt for discipline specific elective subjects, open electives subjects from different institutes of the University. In addition, this program is uniquely designed to increase the employability and to prepare students to work in a Multi-discipline work environment. Program offers Major-Minor degree scheme wherein Major will be in core Chemical Engineering and Minor will be as per students interests.

To provoke independent thoughts in students and importance of team work, program also gives emphasis on outcome based education, design thinking process and cooperative education component involving Projects, Seminar, Internships and activity based learning. We aim and prepare students to be adaptable and industry-ready having competencies across range of technical and non-technical subjects. Chemical Engineers have continuously contributed and still are contributing to improve standard of living of the society through many sustainable processes and products. Program Structure

Formative and summative assessment is carried out in every semester as Continuous and Comprehensive Assessment (CCA) based on evaluation rubrics. The Quality is assessed by grading system.

Innovation in Teaching Learning

Innovation in teaching and learning encourages teachers and students to explore research and use all the tools to uncover something new. It involves a different way of looking at problems and solving them. It helps to improve the attention span of the students. The thinking process helps students to develop their creativity and their problem-solving skills.

  • ICT tools facilitate student learning from home through virtual interactive classroom (viz. MS Team, Google classroom) and teaching aid such as LCD projectors, Electronic writing pad, Web cam, and Internet-enabled computer sys

  • Use of powerpoint presentations enhances students’ understanding and main highlights of the topic through graphical representation, text, images, video, animations etc.

  • Video created by Faculty and other course related videos available on YouTube and slideshare is used by students as supportive study material. Blogs are written by faculty members on latest global issues. NPTEL videos are made available as an additional supporting study material.

  • Microsoft Team is utilized for conduction of lecture, assignment and study material shared on Google Class Room, Continuous assessment through ERP System.

  • Guiding students for Mini and Major Projects to improve their practical knowledge in relation to theory through hands-on training.

  • Various unit operations and processes studied theoretically are performed in virtual laboratories.

  • Faculty members use Fusion 360, CHEMCAD, and other Open Source tools like DWSIM in practical.

ANUBANDH Alumni Connect Program 2020

On 25 January 2020 under Alumni Connect Program of Anubandh 2020, 85 eminent alumni of Chemical Engineering department visited the college and department. Dr Guhe, Head Chem Engg Dept. along with faculty members welcome alumni in Chemical Engineering department by felicitating them, Batch wise, by offering bouquet and gift Bags. Head Chem Engg Dept. gave little presentation explaining Vision, Mission, Program Outcome of Chemical Engineering. Achievements of department were shared with Alumni and appeal is made to them to provide support in providing training and recruitment for students. Later Head explained about MGM University and Chemical Engineering program structure to be offered from AY-2020-21 and also appealed to alumni to publicize MGM University and contribute to progress of JNEC under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Students interacted with Alumni informally and asked many queries. Finally Head thanked Alumni for their time, suggestions, feedback and for gracing the occasion. Program ended on a very happy note.

Industry-Academia Connect Program 2020: Curriculum Design Meeting

On 24 January 2020 under Industry-Academia Connect Program 2020, department invited Alumni to discuss Curriculum Design so as to cater current industry need and hence to be included in Chemical Engineering syllabus under MGM University. Eminent alumni namely Mr. Devinder Singh, Mr. Konark Gupta, Mr. Atul Choudhary, Mr. Vishal Chavan, Mr. Sunil Choudhary, Mr. Raosaheb Patil, Mr. Vikram Rathod, Mr. Ravindra Mundada gave very useful suggestion shared their views on inclusion and omission of subjects in view of current chemical industry needs. It was very productive meeting.

Industry-Academia Connect Program 2020: Panel Discussion

On 24 January 2020 under Industry-Academia Connect Program 2020, Chemical Engineering department conducted a Panel Discussion session for undergraduate students in which eminent alumni from Industry and an entrepreneur, namely Mr. Devinder Singh, Mr. Konark Gupta, Mr. Atul Choudhary, Mr. Vishal Chavan, Mr. Sunil Choudhary, Mr. Raosaheb Patil, Mr. Vikram Rathod, shared their views on important topics in view of current chemical industry needs. Topics for Panel Discussion were (1) Future Ready Chemical Engineers: Factors to upgrade current education system, (2) Importance of Safety in Chemical Process Plant, (3) Industry 4.0 (Chemical Process Automation).It was very fruitful discussion and at the end alumni answered students’ querries.

Industry Visit

Second year chemical engineering students visited the industry “Probus International LLP” in Paithan, Aurangabad on 2nd August 2019. This company is owned by alumnus of Chemical Engineering Department, Mr Vasant Hingnikar. During the visit students observed and understood the advanced separation process to extract essential oils from medicinal plants, seeds and other biomass. Mr Hinginikar keenly explained the process (operated at very high pressure) to all students. Students were very excited to see actual chemical process plant for the first time.

Industry Visit

Third year chemical engineering students visited Food Industry “Cowland Agro Pvt.Ltd.” in Chikalthana, Aurangabad on 19 September 2019. This industry visit was mainly arranged for students as they study an Elective Subject “Food Technology”. During the visit students observed and understood various operations in Dairy Industry i.e. Pasteurization, Heat Exchange, Bottling of product, steam generation etc. It was a fully automated Plant and student understood theprocess automation, piping layout, insulation and support for equipments. Plant Supervisor thoroughly explained all the processes to students.

Guest Lecture

Chemical Engineering Department under the activities of MoU with Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology (CIPET), Aurangabad as a part of which a Guest Lecture-cum-Public Awareness session on “Plastic Waste Management &Recycling Techniques” was arranged for Second, Third and Final year students on 30 September 2019. Dr BelimAkhtar and Mr Seturaman, faculty members of CIPET explained necessity of plastic recycling through Videos and presentations. Students understood the difference between various types of plastic which can be recycled and which cannot. They also allowed our second year students to undergo 2 weeks of Internship at CIPET during winter vacation.

Industrial Visit

Final year chemical engineering students visited the on-campus Sewage Treatment Plant and Effluent Treatment Plant being operated by Mahatma Gandhi Mission. During the visit students studied both Sewage Treatment and Effluent Treatment processes and understood various waste water treatment plant design aspects i.e. Aeration unit, Sedimentation unit, Filtration unit and Piping layout for the visit.

Departmental Activities

Induction Program

At the beginning of first year before actual teaching begins, newly enrolled students go through a fun filled 3 weeks of specially designed Induction Program to improve their social and professional ethics and interpersonal skills so that their transition from junior college to degree college is smooth. Students get introduced to campus, department, seniors and faculty members. Senior students are assigned as mentors to first year students.

Industrial Visits

Industrial visits are arranged every month which bridges the gap between theory and actual real life practical situation faced in an industry.

Guest Lectures

Eminent speakers from industry and academia share their knowledge & skills on industrial problems. This activity covers the content beyond syllabus. It improves the students’ knowledge immensely about a particular topic, a subject or overall discipline.

Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) student chapter

Events such as Quiz Competition, Project Competition, technical writing competition etc. are conducted under IIChE student chapter. IIChE student members get to attend national events such as conferences, seminars, competitions etc. at a discounted rate. Department encourages students to take part in such events.

Workshops

Department organizes workshops for students such as GATE preparation, Human values & life management techniques etc.

Parent-Teacher Meet

Parents are one of the stakeholders and every year they are invited to the department to discuss the progress of their ward and to get their feedback to improve the quality of program.

Alumni Meet

Every year the Institute organizes alumni meet so as to facilitate placement, training for students, establish a rapport and communication between students and alumni through whole day interactions.

Annual Technical Festival SWAYAMBHU

Institute organizes technical festival for students every year to nurture their co-&-extra curricular activities and leadership skills.

National Safety day celebration

Awareness is created among students and non-teaching staff about operational safety, fire fighting techniques and handling of various types of fire extinguishers.

Aptitude Training

Student Training Cell arranges Aptitude Training sessions for students so as to prepare them for placements and competitive examinations.

Farewell to Final year students

Students from Second and Third year students give farewell to final year students and wish them luck for their career.

Students get involved in many community services and social activities under N.S.S. scheme.

Social Gathering Razzmatazz

This is the biggest and most awaited event of the year students wait and prepare for. Students participate in many events such as sports, drama, singing, fun games etc. This event develops teamwork and leadership skills in students.
